Although the cloud industry buzz has continued from last week, this week also saw new open source announcements. Certainly the most talked about news was Google’s Open Networking Summit announcement that it has updated its internal networks with an open source technology called OpenFlow. - On ITWorld, Brian Proffitt discusses how companies now publically aspire to be “the Linux of” whatever industry they’re in, which is an indicator of Linux success: “How Linux Defines Success and Innovation.”
- On Mashable, Lauren Drell reported on the Mifos open source microfinancing project in her article, “Microfinance: Why Open Source Means Bigger Impact.”
- Sam Dean blogged on OStatic about the first (sold out) batch of Raspberry Pi devices being shipped this week: “First Wave of Raspberry Pi Units Arriving in Users’ Hands.”
- Wired Enterprise covered Urs Hölzle’s Google OpenFlow networking announcement in Steven Levy’s article, “Going With the Flow: Google’s Secret Switch to the Next Wave of Networking.”
- Paula Rooney blogged on ZDNet “Enterprises: Embrace Open Source Development or go Extinct,”about a recent Black Duck Software webinar where Forrester Research Analyst, Jeffrey Hammond, stated that the growth of open source innovation is forcing enterprises IT organizations to embrace open source projects in their IT strategies.
- Twitter announcing its sponsorship of the Apache Software Foundation was covered by Ryan Paul in the ars technia article, “Twitter Signs up to Sponsor Open Source Apache Software Foundation.”
And in case you haven’t heard – Linus Torvalds wins the tech. equivalent of a Nobel Prize: the Millennium Technology Prize.
