There are 32 flavors – and then some! – of open source projects, and selecting the “right” one for your needs is crucial. As the latest Future of Open Source Survey suggested, many developers select projects based on the size of the community, availability of commercial support, and project maturity. I think we often co-mingle open source development with open source usage. The difference being a collaborative development process vs. harvesting of open source code to fill a need. While there is cross-over, I am finding that new entrants (and yes there are many newbies) that are harvesters have very different expectations than developers that want help enhance a code base. Not sure of the sample size, but your data reflects that one size does not fit all.
